Rural electrification in Madagascar

Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world and faces major challenges in energy supply. Only about 15% of the population has access to electricity, and in rural areas, it's only about 7%. Many people continue to cook with firewood or charcoal, which further drives the massive deforestation of the island: a large part of the original forest areas have already disappeared.

At the same time, Madagascar has enormous potential for renewable energy. With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, solar energy is a cost-effective and practical solution, especially for remote regions, where connecting to the national power grid is not realistic in the foreseeable future.

Planning the solar power system in Madagascar

Since 2019, our partner atmosfair has been involved in Madagascar and has financed the development of decentralized solar power grids (mini grids). The facilities provide a total of about 50 villages with clean, reliable, and affordable electricity.

Each mini grid consists of a photovoltaic system, a high-performance lithium-ion battery, and a newly constructed local power grid. The size of the facilities is adjusted to the needs of the respective municipalities.

The Beurer Foundation has been supporting this project since May 2025 and is contributing to the saving of 833 t CO2 per year.

Electrification brings noticeable improvements: households and businesses save on high costs for diesel generators, the local economy and craftsmanship grow, and the quality of life increases significantly.
